Sport tests, cultural and amusing quizzes through specific play route, will permit you to discover the famous Abbey of Fontevraud and the Chateau de Brézé. Participants will have to solve enigmas and check every corner of the castle to be able to go ahead. By the end of the game, the lives of the monks and the Chateau de Brézé undergrounds will not retain any more secrets to them.

Dates and rates 2004

Day 1 :
14.00 : Meeting point: Abbey of Fontevraud entrance. Situated at the borders of Anjou, Poitou and Tourraine, this abbey is one of the most important monastic centers in Europe. At the 12th c, it became the necropolis of the Plantagenet dynasty and it houses the tombs of Henry II Plantagenet, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and Richard Lion’s Heart.
You will be able to leave your luggage at Priory Saint Lazare, located inside the abbey, In a magnificent monastic environment.
Beginning of the game :
- First part (2/ 3 hours) will take place in the abbey itself and the village of Fontevraud.
History: in 1084 Pétronille of Chemillé, first abbess of Fontevraud is named at the head of the Fontevrist order by his founder, Robert d’Abrissel. Devoted to her master as was Saint Magadalena to the Christ,, she dedicated deep admiration to him; Observing her rule, she carried out Fontevraud to prosperity.
Participants will try to explain this strange relationship between its members, depicting, through genealogy, the history of the abbey. Players will roam from the church to the scriptorium and to the apse of the church or to the “Jardin des simples”... There, special events will give them the possibility of sharing for a while what was the true monastic life. They will meet Brother Gymnaticus, Brother Gardinarius, the Scrip Phylactus… but also the bandit of Evraud or Louise of Bourbon. Sport, astuteness, ability and observation talents will be required….
Traditional dinner in the former stables of the Castle de Brézé or in the strange cave dwelling. (Traditional meal, « les fouées » : roll cooked on wood fire and stuffed with beans, rillette, cheese...)
- Second part of the game (from 1 to 1.30 hour)
It takes place in the Chateau de Brézé itself. Hidden under the Renaissance castle are incredible underground cellars and tunnels, which housed up to 2000 people during the religion wars of the 16th c.! The game will come to an end at nightfall; by torchlight, you will wander around the fantastic galleries stretching over 3 km long!
